Anna Dorothea Therbusch (1721-1782) was one of the most important artists of the 18th century. Even as a young woman, she worked for clients in the vicinity of the Prussian royal house. Later she reacted in Paris, where she succeeded as one of the few women ever in 1767 the académie royale de peinture et de sculpture. Back in her hometown of Berlin, she became a sought-after portrait painter of upscale society and made mythological histories for the castles of Friedrich II. . For the first time, the catalogue makes Therbusch’s paintings stored in the museums and other institutions of Berlin and Brandenburg systematically tangible in a book. In addition, thematic essays convey new insights and considerations on their way of working and the materials used, on their lives and the themes of her works, on personal networks as well as on reception history. Thus, the band offers a current introduction to the creation of this extraordinary artist.
