Descrizione

The Albertina in Vienna houses one of the most famous art collections in the world. This opulently illustrated volume presents the masterworks of the museum and its collectors, Duke Albert of Saxe-Teschenand his wife, Archduchess Maria Christina. The lively and exciting history of their collection began in the late Baroque under Maria Theresa and continued through the years of revolutionary upheaval in Europeand America up to the resurgence of conservative powers after the Congress of Vienna. Four informative essays offer the reader vivid insights into the aristocratic culture between absolutism and Enlightenment. They show how a close network of collectors and dealers, and agents across Europe enabled Albert and Maria Christina to assemble their collection. The present publication is complemented by a volume of essays edited by Christian Benedik and Klaus Albrecht Schroder, that reveal new facets of the variegated lives of the founders of the Albertina.
