Gaston La Touche (1854-1913) was a leading colourist of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century who associated with Manet and other important artists of the time. He was close friends with many of the Impressionists, but chose to follow an independent path in his technique and subject matter. His extraordinary imagination revealed itself in his wonderful depictions of monkeys, balls, fetes, theatrical subjects and interiors, all tinged with a a wry sense of humour. La Touche’s paintings of fireworks and fountains, inspired by the gardens of Versailles, are unique in both quality and spectrum of colour.Neglected for almost a century, with little or no research, La Touche’s work is now being reevaluated. In both commercial and art historical circles, his paintings are highly sought after. This book details the artist’s oeuvre from his early Realist period to the morewell-known Belle ?poque fantasies. It includes many important paintings from private collections and also recently discovered museum pieces some have not been reproduced or exhibited since La Touche’s death.
