The outstanding collection of works on paper by the Blue Rider group of artists in the Lenbachhaus is being presented for the first time. This book reproduces the watercolours, drawings, and prints from the collection in whole-page illustrations and relates the works to each other. To date there has been no publication devoted to the comprehensive collection of works on paper by the members of the Blue Rider group of artists in the Lenbachhaus. This gap is now being filled by this comprehensive work, which can also be seen in many ways as a catalogue of the collection. It gathers together works by artists including Heinrich Campendonk, Robert Delaunay, Alexej von Jawlensky, Paul Klee, Else Lasker-Schüler, August Macke, Franz Marc, and Marianne von Werefkin, as well as Wassily Kandinsky, Gabriele Münter, and Alfred Kubin. Some of these works are being published and thus made accessible to art-lovers for the first time. The catalogue reproduces 230 pictures in colour, discusses and enlarges upon various aspects of the graphic works of the Blue Rider and attempts to position them in the artistic world of the time. The compilation enables beholders to see relationships between the works, for example between the woodcuts Birth of the Horses or Leaping Foal by Franz Marc and the dynamic equestrian depictions in watercolours by Wassily Kandinsky, or between the brilliant watercolours of August Macke and those of Paul Klee, such as Garden Gate in Tunis and Föhn in Marc’s Garden.
