The conspicuous Donation, totally unprecedented in the Italian and European context of the time, consisted of 139 paintings, 54 graphic works and 154 books with dedications that test the various phases of the painter’s artistic production, his talent for experimentation, as well as his friendship and shared research with some of the most important artists of the second half of the 19th century in Europe such as Edgar Degas, Edouard Manet, Gustave Caillebotte. De Nittis gave his personal contribution, all Italian, to the definition and fortune of Impressionism.
