This exhibition has brought together thirty-one paintings by La Tour, including two from the Museo Nacional del Prado and another twenty-nine on loan: an exceptional number, given that there are just over forty known works by his hand. The paintings on display include his most celebrated works and come from institutions such as the Musée du Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Kimbell Museum in Fort Worth, the Royal Collection Trust (UK), and the LACMA and J. Paul Getty Museum, both in Los Angeles, as well ad the fine arts museums of Nantes, Rennes, Nancy and Epinal. The catalogue shows the evolution of the artist’s style, subtle advances in his technique and his different approaches to figures that interested him – from coarse rappresentatives of the lowest level of his society such as blind musicians who subsisted by begging, squalid peasants and apostles with the most common appearance to the figures who appearin his refined candlelight scenes, where they carry out everyday activities or illustrate Bible passages steeped in lyricism, solitude and tranquillity. The catalog includes the latest findings on Georges de La Tour by renowned scholars on Baroque painting such as Jean-Pierre Cuzin, Guillaume Kazerouni, Dimitri Salmon and Andrés Ubeda de los Cobos.
