Italian artist Piero Manzoni (1933–1963) was a leading figure of the postwar avant-garde whose brief yet prolific career left a profound impact on twentieth-century art. His radical ideas anticipated later developments in Conceptual, Performance, and Arte Povera movements. This publication brings together, for the first time, a selection of his early works, offering a rare opportunity to explore the origins of his experimental practice. Largely self-taught, Manzoni forged an independent visual language that combined gestural abstraction, surreal imagery, and unconventional materials. Immersed in the dynamic Milan art scene, he drew on the influence of Lucio Fontana, Alberto Burri, and the Movimento Arte Nucleare while pursuing his own radical path. His early works—featuring stamped impressions, enigmatic floating figures, and dense, tactile surfaces of tar and enamel—reveal a restless engagement with material, gesture, and the unconscious. In these explorations, Manzoni began to push painting beyond image and color, a pursuit that would culminate in his celebrated Achromes — white, textured surfaces in which pigment disappears altogether, leaving pure material presence. Even in these formative years, he was redefining what painting could be, laying the foundations for one of the most innovative practices of the twentieth century.
